If there ever was a year of heavenly signs, 2024 has been it. Did you catch a glimpse of the recent aurora that turned the northern sky a brilliant mauve and emerald around the world? The rare G5 geomagnetic storm, the largest in over two decades, was powerful enough to reach across the southern United States from Arizona to Florida. It made for some stunningly beautiful photos of saguaro cactus, ocotillos and palm trees silhouetted against a mauve colored sky. 

The rarity of the event has led many conspiracy theorists to conclude that experiments taking place between May 8 – 10th at the HAARP facility in Fairbanks, Alaska were responsible for the heavenly show. Yes, it’s true, we can make our own mini auroras by ionizing the atmosphere with High Frequency radio waves, but the recent solar storm that released terawatts of energy when it collided with our atmosphere on Friday evening was far more powerful than anything humanity could create.

I am a man of science. I know that 2+2=4, and that coronal mass ejections on the surface of the sun can send charged particles hurtling 93 million miles across space towards earth’s upper atmosphere.  When these charged particles collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms, they release photons that travel the remaining 150 or so miles to our retinas. Our brains then do some rapid neural processing and we go “Oooh! Ahhh! An aurora!”.  

Such is the world as seen through our natural eyes, but could there be more to the Aurora Borealis than particle interactions?  

Repeatedly, throughout scripture we are told that the “heavens declare the Glory of God”. Psalm 97:6 says it a little differently: “The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.” And sadly, the Apostle Paul tells us: “the wrath of God is revealed from heaven” against a world that has replaced God with a purely natural understanding of the universe (Romans 1:18-20).

So it would seem, the physical heavens are a bridge between the visible and the invisible. They reveal to us a reality hidden in other dimensions. Listen to John’s description of the throne in heaven:  

^“And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.”

Revelation 4:1-3

I don’t know about you, but the only emerald colored rainbow I’ve ever seen is an aurora.

Aurora’s make for some of the most startling revelations of the heavenly dimensions. Unlike the periodic signals sent by the sun, moon and stars, such as solar and lunar eclipses, auroras are not subject to mathematical prediction. Only after a CME or solar flare bursts from the sun’s surface can scientists predict its potential for impacting Earth’s atmosphere. Even then, it’s mostly guess work as to how the aurora will appear.

A century ago, in the spring of 1918, the light from an aurora took Americans by surprise as it “filled the heavens to the northeast and northwest as far as the eye could see, forming a great arch…” Astronomers call this a SAR arc and it is an extremely rare form of an aurora.

In 1918, the eerie red glow of the outer arch reached all the way south to Cuba. People were able to read newspapers at midnight in the usually dark streets of Washington DC. Telephone operators, police and fire departments were flooded with panicked callers. The red glow had fooled many into believing a massive fire was burning “somewhere to the north” of their location. Soldiers at an army base in Texas jumped into their automobiles and raced northward to fight what they thought was a fire on the horizon. They ran out of gas before realizing the source of their fear.

And then there were the numerous independent reports from people who believed they had seen something else in the sky that night… an angel…with outstretched wings flying southward.

Is such a thing possible?

Moses was drawn with his physical eyes to the sight of a bush that “burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.” (Exodus 3:2-3)

When the wood of a bush burns, photons (a.k.a. light) are released both by particles heated to incandescence and by atoms transitioning from one energy state to another. In Moses’ case the glow that lit the bush turned out to be the Angel of the Lord ionizing the air molecules surrounding the bush giving off a flame-like luminance.

The writer of the book of Hebrews tells us that God: “made his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.” (Hebrews 1:7 (KJV Strong’s)) Unto, Elijah and Elisha:  “there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.” 2 Kings 2:11 (KJV Strong’s)

I wouldn’t say that every aurora is caused by angelic activity, but it is certainly possible that an Angel could appear in the form of an aurora.

It is interesting to note that angels (and sometimes dragons) are the most reported sights in an aurora. Why not horses cows, pigs or chickens?

Before you get all excited and think you’ve spotted your gaurdian angel in the aurora, ask yourself: Why would an angel make its presence known? Do they want to comfort us? Satan said to Jesus: “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” (Psalms 91:10-12). Other angels destroyed the first born in Egypt or killed 85,000 Assyrian soldiers in a night. In Revelation chapter 15, seven angels emerge from the temple in heaven carrying vials “full of the wrath of God”. And don’t forget a third of the angels chose to follow Satan. So angels can be good or bad, they can protect us or harm us, but they don’t need to be visible to carry out their assignment. If they can function behind a cloak of invisibility why would they make their presence known?

Every time an angel appeared bodily in scripture it was to communicate a message. Most of the time the message was verbal, such as when Gabriel announced to Zechariah that his wife would bear him a son, but when Balaam and David saw an angel with its sword drawn they didn’t need any words to understand the message. They repented.
